Protecting Your Legal Interests
in Japan

I’m Junichi Nakai –– a bilingual lawyer located in Chiba (adjacent to Tokyo) –– with over 15 years’ experience of protecting the legal rights of non-Japanese individuals and small businesses both in Japan and overseas. Dually-qualified to practice law in Japan and under the jurisdiction of England and Wales, I am observant of the similarities and differences in the legal systems, as well as being attuned to both cultures.
Navigating the legal landscape in Japan can be a complex and overwhelming experience, especially when dealing with an unfamiliar legal system, its processes and language barriers. Whether you’re a resident of Japan, a visitor, a foreign resident dealing with inheritance matters in Japan, or conducting business with customers or associates in Japan, being able to clearly comprehend local laws and procedures is crucial when legal matters arise.
Based in Chiba but also servicing Tokyo and neighbouring regions, I offer legal services in both English and Japanese, ensuring clear communication and effective representation. As further described on this site, I primarily focus on the areas of criminal defence, small businesses affairs, inheritance matters and civil litigation to assist international clients.

Main Areas of Practice
My experience extends beyond those described below, so contact me by the email form if you have a query that falls outside these areas.

Criminal Defence
Have you or has someone you know been arrested or facing criminal charges in Japan? Having a defence lawyer that can assist you in English from the very first step is imperative.

Small Business
Have dealings with clients or businesses in Japan? Services for drafting and review of contracts, negotiations and transactions can be arranged on an ongoing or single-case basis.

Inheritance
Need to handle inheritance matters for property and finances held in Japan? This could be for a Japanese relative or non-Japanese resident of Japan.

Civil Litigation
Are you considering legal action or has a suit been served against you? Example cases include divorce and custody, monetary damages, personal injury.
Advantages

Close to Narita Airport
Situated in downtown Chiba, my office is less than an hour away from Narita International Airport. This allows me to be able to be on site at the early stage of any detention, when a suspected individual may be under a high level of stress.

Comprehensive English Communication
I can handle all communication in English, ensuring that you fully understand every aspect of your legal matters without any language barriers. With the context of your situation in mind, I strive to explain Japanese legal processes in simple, accessible language to help you make informed decisions.

Extensive Experience with Japan’s Legal System
With a deep understanding of Japan’s legal framework and local procedures across a range of circumstances, I am well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the legal landscape, providing you with the expert guidance you need and contact with your support providers whether based in Japan or overseas.

Cultural Insight and Sensitivity
Having resided overseas myself and through my ongoing professional experience, I recognize the unique challenges expatriates face when dealing with legal matters in a foreign country. This allows me to effectively address cultural and communication differences, and provide solutions that align with your specific circumstances.
